Consultation

Consultation is about exploring one’s options for psychotherapeutic treatment. During a consultation, in which one describes one’s difficulties, impasses, aspirations and goals with the therapist. The therapist offers recommendations and guidance through the often confusing maze of therapeutic options, from individual or group psychotherapy, to diagnostic assessments, to referral for psychopharmacological and other medical interventions. The goal is to create a partnership with a mental health professional in making choices among the treatment options available.

Individual Therapy

Individual Psychotherapy provides an opportunity for you to share your thoughts and feelings in a private setting with an involved, objective, professional. Exploring confusing and perhaps painful interpersonal and emotional experiences in this setting can provide new perspectives that lead to productive change. Many of us have unexamined assumptions about ourselves and other people that lock us in to counterproductive and unhappy cycles of interaction. A process of psychotherapeutic exploration can highlight the potentials for positive change in how we think, feel, and interact, breaking into vicious circles, releasing our potential to take control of our lives.

Group Therapy

In addition to the therapeutic processes described above in relation to individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy provides an opportunity for in vivo feedback about one’s patterns of relating with other people. With the guidance of the group therapist, one has the opportunity to help and be helped, to learn and benefit from the experiences of others in the group.

Family Therapy

When more than one generation is added to the picture, (e.g., children and/or grandparents) to form a family therapy, the systemic dynamics become potentially overwhelmingly complex. Family therapists are trained to recognize and re-form destructive family dynamics in ways that can free all family members from repeating them inside and outside the family.

Couple Therapy

Relationships can reach an impasse when each partner, unknowingly, sets off counterproductive patterns in the other, creating self-reinforcing vicious circles. The addition of an objective third party, a couples therapist, can illuminate these self-defeating dynamics. Our therapists relate in depth to the couple to understand more fully the couple’s defenses, anxieties, and attachment styles.

Video Therapy

The Center for Emerging Adulthood offers online therapy through our secure, HIPAA-compliant online video portal.  By offering remote services, we are better able to avoid treatment interruptions for reasons such as travel, and maintain consistent treatment that is accessible and convenient.

Personality Assessment

Personality Assessment involves the administration, scoring, and interpretation of empirically supported measures of personality traits and styles, aimed to clarify clinical diagnoses, inform psychological treatment approaches, and increase the accuracy of predicting behaviors in various contexts including being used to screen candidates for college and employment.

The types of personality tests that the Center for Emerging Adulthood offers include self-report inventories and projective tests such at the MMPI and The Rorschach Inkblot Test.

Psychoanalysis

Many of us find ourselves, despite our best intentions, repeating counterproductive, even self-destructive, patterns in our lives. These patterns are enabled by “blind spots” in our self-awareness that can be detected and corrected when subject to a psychoanalytic perspective. Contemporary psychoanalysis has evolved to a great extent since Freud’s day. It is now much more collaborative and user friendly than the analysis of old, while retaining the excitement of the original insight into the unconscious. Read the American Psychoanalytic Association’s description to learn more.

Psychiatric Referrals

Should patients require a psychiatric medication we work closely with referring psychiatrists or can provide you with a referral for a consultation with a psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist.  At the Center for Emerging Adulthood, we work closely with a network of psychiatrists to ensure a collaborative treatment approach.

It’s difficult if not impossible to see our own blind spots, especially those that interfere with our ability to form and sustain relationships. We all can benefit from an intelligent, experienced, objective, guide—-a therapist. A little insight can go a long way.”

– Dr. Neil Altman
